"Working it out together"

Restorative Justice Nelson has been providing restorative processes between people who have been harmed and people who have caused harm for 25 years in our local rohe (region).

We work alongside the court, corrections, and our local community organisations to bring people together (when safe and appropriate) to talk about the harm that has happened and the impact it has had on the people harmed. Participants then explore what the person who caused the harm might do to move towards repairing some of that harm, and also to ensure such an event never happens again. Our process is entirely voluntary and focusses on accountability, deep listening, and seeking restoration and repair.

We seek to fit the process around the people, rather than people around the process, and to provide a culturally and emotionally safe environment for difficult but important and potentially transformative conversations.

Who we are

Restorative Justice Nelson is a Charitable Trust governed by a Trust Board. The organisation has three part time employees:

Miranda Warner

Business Lead

Miranda has had a long-standing interest in and passion for restorative justice, weaving it into her university studies (MA Divinity, MA Applied Theatre, Drama and the Criminal Justice System), and utilizing restorative practices in previous mahi. She became a contract facilitator for Restorative Justice Nelson in 2021 and now holds the position of Business Lead whilst continuing to facilitate restorative justice processes. She is always looking for new ways for Restorative Justice Nelson to partner with others to uplift our local communities.
Miranda also works at RISE for ‘Hikitia!’, as a Community Mobiliser working to prevent family and sexual violence. When not at work Miranda is a writing a musical about a radical 17th nun, studying te reo māori, and is often found walking, board gaming, singing, and acting.

Mark Rutledge

Practice Lead

Mark has been with Restorative Justice Nelson for over twenty years. For most of that time he was the Co-ordinator of the service ensuring all contract and statutory requirements were being meet as well as facilitating conferences. Currently he has relinquished those contractual requirements, working part-time as a facilitator, in the role of Practice Lead.
Mark is passionate about helping people to have, sometimes difficult conversations, to address harm that has happened to or been caused by them. Restorative Justice is not the soft option as it requires people to take ownership of what has happened and to be personally invested in working towards restoration, whatever that looks like.

Kathryn Copland

Administrator

Having joined the Restorative Justice team in 2019, Kathryn has worked as an administrator and community representative for the past seven years. Kathryn is motivated to support clients thoughtfully and mindfully with empathy and consideration with wherever they are at in their journey - whether it be the friendly face in the office or supporting in a conference.
Kathryn lives in a new subdivision in Wakefield with her husband and children and loves to get out in the outdoors. She works to keep workflow running smoothly, assisting in office management and be active in collaborative teamwork. She is passionate about Restorative Justice as she personally knows the impacts it can have on those within the community.
